The evolution of home appliances

The evolution of home appliances

Every industry has shown remarkable strides in the revolution of digital electronics. Even though some manufacturers have shown hesitation, the home appliance industry is slowly catching up to this revolution as well. For instance, a customer can now buy a dishwasher that will start hours after its owner has gone to bed. Another example would be how a refrigerator will now flash a signal when there is a large amount of lint accumulated under it.

There are various models such as these that are changing the way we look at life. Most of these models are all major home appliances, appliances that we interact with on a daily basis.

Why choose electronic home appliances?
Needless to say, electronic home appliances make life a lot easier. Even though most appliances are mechanical products at heart, there are electronic devices added to it which improve the functionality of the product. These devices control the actions of the appliance and detect when there is potential trouble. Besides, there is less maintenance required with an electronic appliance.

With the IoT (Internet of Things) right around the corner, there’s no saying when we will require these digitized products to run our lives. Just the way many predicted that the Internet would change our lives forever, there’s a good chance that IoT will as well.

Home appliances with innovative features
It goes without saying that a good home appliance with very interesting features will not go unnoticed. There have been several debates over how useful these products are (and whether or not they are absolutely necessary), but here are some really interesting products that have innovative features:

  • Whirlpool Corporation came up with a refrigerator that rings an alarm if the door stays open for too long. This is a good way to teach people that keeping the refrigerator door open for too long causes the food to spoil. Additionally, this fridge causes flickering of lights in the electronic panel if the freezer’s temperature shoots up. Every two months, it reminds the owner (using a light) that the fridge needs to be cleaned.
  • Whirlpool Corporation came up with a smart dishwasher that can be programmed to work up to nine hours after being set. Whirlpool also has specialized washing machines and dryers that have microcomputer devices logged into them to improve upon their functionality.
  • Carrier Corporation came up with an air conditioner that keeps the room cool during the day and warm at night.
  • Sharp Electronics Corporation has designed a specialized microwave oven that determines just how long a piece of meat must be cooked. This is discovered by the aroma and moisture the meat gives off while cooking.
  • West Bend Company came up with a microcomputer, known as the Kitchen Controller which can be programmed to turn on certain appliances at specific times. It also has the functionality of converting measurements to the metric system and can, therefore, be used to balance a checkbook.
  • Sunbeam Corporation, among other home appliance makers, sells electronically-controlled blenders. This food processor comes with a metric converter and a timer.

These are just a handful of innovations that are already in the market.
